Coralline - The Sea Dragon

Coralline – The Sea Dragon

As I always look for ways to improve the quality of my photographs, I found this great tutorial. It is more complex than one would need but it helped me understand how professionals get that beautiful gradient background.

So far I achieved this effect on some of my pieces using Gimp (equivalent of Photoshop in Unix). You cut out the image of the piece and add a gradient background layer to it. It just takes too uch time and adding shadows make it look less natural.

All the credits go to Jeffrey Opp. Thanks

Hello,

Finally I managed to edit the video of my interview on TV Rogers (French only) and uploaded it on YouTube. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can check the related Post I made in January.

I am honoured to be one of the 2015 recipients of the Ontario Arts Council granting programme aimed at Francophones “Visual artists and Craft artists”. It will allow me to better explore the “Lines in Nature/La nature des choses” theme of the upcoming exhibition at La Fab, Chelsea (May 23 – June 21). I have mentioned this in a previous post.

I had the pleasure to be invited to appear live on a local French TV show called ”Entre-nous” on Tuesday, January 27th. The TV Rogers hosts Barbara Laurenstin and Pierre-Antoine Rivard Paquet were very nice and we talked about my work and the reasons behind it. The interview felt too short and I wished I had been smarter in some of my answers but I believe we covered all the messages I wanted to convey (the Ottawa School of Art Alumni show running until February 8, the Exhibition at La Fab opening May 23, the fact that I am an artist in residence at the Ottawa School of Art and the link to my website so people can get all of the info they want). I don’t have a tape of the show yet but will post it as soon as I can get my hands onto it. In the meantime, here are some pictures taken on the set.

Every 2 years the Ottawa School of Art runs an Alumni show. It’s a great opportunity to see what fellow artists and friends have been working on and to catch up with them as well. Some don’t live in Ottawa.
It’s also a nice way to start the New Year as artist get paid CARFAC fees (for showing work in a professional Gallery).

Earlier this year I was approached by the Ottawa School of Art to be the Alumni Guest Speaker at the 2014 Graduation Ceremony. I was touched by this honour and promptly accepted. I also decided I would be talking about what the last 5 years taught me as a practicing artist.

Catching up with Marc (husband of my departed friend Paule Fournier).

It was a pleasure to meet the 11 promising artists and the Grad show called Meta is open to the public until July 26.
You’ll find the revised version of my presentation in .pdf format (notes were added to the slides).

Panel discussion with the presenters

Panel discussion with the presenters

Last October, I went to a conference for artists called ARTPRENEUR. I love to learn about the business of art as I know there is always room for improvement. With a theme like “Rebranding the artist”, they picked my curiosity. The program was announcing a whole day of networking, information/demo booths, 2 conferences out of 4 to choose from, breakfast and lunch included (nothing fancy of course). It sounded like a good deal.

WHAT I LEARNED

  • Inbound marketing is the key concept (use of Social Media to draw traffic, convert visitors to leads and leads to sales, then analyze results to improve upon);
  • Divide targeted audience into Buyer Persona (Name them, Describe them, Where are they online?, Keywords they search for?, How you solve their problems?, Content that serves them?);
  • Create Content for each Buyer Persona;
  • It’s all about getting people to care (about the product/brand). If they care they are more likely to purchase.
  • Be interesting, be consistent, be giving/sharing, be assertive and be analytical.

WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT IT

Suki Lee

Suki Lee

On the plus side, the Keynote address was outstanding. I could have left the conference after that speech because that person nailed it. Her name: Suki Lee, founder of the full-service marketing agency called Inbox Communications. She was smart, to the point and had a great on-stage presence. One thing for sure is that organizers should have kept her for the end of the day instead of having her opening the conference because it was mostly a letdown after that.

Sonny Juane

Sonny Juane

One of the presenters stood out as well for his sense of humour and a no-nonsense approach. Sonny Juane of Wolfgang Design Works.

On the downside, it was clear that some of the speakers were only there to pitch their business services. As well, public speaking is a skill and knowing about a subject is not enough to be able to address a crowd in an engaging manner. It often ends up being boring for the listener to just hear someone read out the slides on the screen…

Overall and with an early bird ticket which cost $35, I would say that it was worth it. I did learn a few things and enjoyed seeing friends and colleagues at the event. In a previous post I did mention books that help a great deal understand some of the concepts mentioned that day.

Favorite quote of the day by Carlo Lombard: “You network is your net worth”

I found this website full of smart advices for artists. The booklet on ”Art Marketing” is a definite must-read. Portrait artist Gwenn Seemel explains the why and how of a sustainable art practice with easy to understand lingo that is down right to the point. It even has illustrations. Can’t ask for anything more.

This is exiting news for me as I have been wanting to make my own yearly Newsletter for a while now and finally found the energy to do so. I would have wanted for it to come out earlier but at least it’s done now. It can be seen on my website under the News section. It’s in PDF format.

————————————

Business of Art, kiln firing

Every potter and ceramic artist has at some point dreaded the “bad load” coming out of the kiln. When things don’t turn the way we expect, we tend to get quite upset.

Having worked so far either at school or a community studio, I have never been able to load my own kiln and it often happens that pieces get broken or overfired. Getting upset and blaming it on the technician is not going to change anything.

There are also many factors that could have influenced the way the piece turns out such as the proximity of the piece with another glaze that reacted chemically, glitches in the kiln elements resulting in overheating…

The best advice I ever got from one of my mentors, Jim Thomson, was to learn to LET GO of expectations. Once the work is in the kiln, it’s not up to you anymore.

If things didn’t turn out the way you wanted, acknowledge your disappointment and move on quickly to look at each piece in an analytical manner.

Ask questions such as:

  • What actually worked?
  • Is there anything that wasn’t intended that you could work from or with (you might have to give a different meaning to the piece, or might try to repeat the result with other pieces or add a twist to it)?
  • What can you learn from what happened (take notes of what you do when making a piece and when possible the firing conditions and results)

Remember that you can always add underglaze(s) or some glaze (not too much, and leave unglazed space at the bottom as it will tend to run) onto the piece and refire it.

In the end, you will come to realize that fewer pieces than expected might be a total loss.

Either way, there’s always the next load… 🙂
