260 Fingers

Last week-end, I went to what now feels like my personal pilgrimage, my annual rendezvous with local clay artists and friends: 260 Fingers (Glebe Community Centre, Ottawa). I usually peruse the aisles, mostly chatting with colleagues, longing for work by mentors and friends Leta and Don Cormier, checking out what other artists have been doing, discovering the year’s guests, wishing I was one of them some day, except that this year I came back with 2 pieces. Part of the reason I bought pieces this year is because I have been working as a Gallery Artist/Curator/Manager and I often hear people saying ”I’ll buy from you next time, next year…”, which always feels as a missed opportunity for both the artist and the potential collector. And I realized I had been doing the same for a few years, though to be fair I haven’t had any so-called “income” in a while being a full-time artist and mother to a toddler. This year though I allowed myself to indulge in buying art pieces I will treasure, while also choosing consciously to reinvest some of my earnings into the Arts Community.

I talked to Toronto artist Chiho Tokita, whose sculptures allude to functional work. I loved the fact that she works with coils and through addition and subtraction, constructs her pieces without the use of a mold. My favourite was the one that looked like a boat, of course…

This year, one of the guests’ work by Toronto artist Jeannie Pappas, reminded me of local artist Stefan Thompson, whose work I always found a little creepy but fascinating to look at. This is what I mean.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the direction artist Susie Osler is going. I knew of her colourful work but it never resonated with me as much as her series called “Objects for the hand and heart” does now. I can’t wait to see where it will lead her. The pieces are so tactile, soft like bones and antlers can be, “spirit-like” in their white porcelain body, cold to the touch, organic in their shape and “shamanic” in nature. Loved, loved, loved.

This year I tried to expand my presence on the market. I even spent a week in Montreal to talk to various Galleries. There are places of interest that I haven’t pursued further at the moment but it was a great adventure with positive feedback on my work as I brought some pieces along for the ride.

You can now find my work at the following locations:

  • The Hintonburg Pottery Shop / Earthen Vessels Clay Studio (Ottawa, ON)
  • The Ottawa School of Art Boutique (Ottawa, ON)

Today I went to see the Ottawa Guild of Potters Spring Sale. I am still a member of the Guild but am not currently exhibiting with them as it is mostly functional work people look for in these show. This is the 2nd time they use the former Horticulture Building at the Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. It was a hot and humid day both inside and out but the natural light was amazing.

I had the pleasure to assist to a presentation about Tamba (Tanba) Pottery followed by a throwing demonstration by visiting Potter Takeshi Shimizu.
Here are a few things he mentioned that I found interesting:

      • He found our commercial raku clay to be very hard to wedge as it was soft in the middle and hard on the outside. Mind you he wedged a whole bag at once and said he’s used to bigger than that but softer;
      • He can throw about 150-200 yunomi (simple mugs) a day…;
      • I was surprised to learn that Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada went to his village and together with Muneyoshi Yanagi (Japanese philosopher and founder of the mingei (folk craft) movement in Japan in the late 1920s and 1930s) they had a direct influence on the revival of Tamba ware as it had fallen pray to mass production;
      • In Japan, potters pray to a “god for pottery” so pots fire well. While it does not have a name but once thing he knows to be certain is that it is a female god; :0
      • He made some of his tools;
      • Shimizu has 4 kilns and it includes electric, gaz and wood/salt kilns.

Some characteristics of Tamba Pottery:

      • putting the glaze on the shoulder of the pots;
      • wood firing;
      • cat-scratch-like marks on the ware

Quotes by Muneyoshi Yanagi:

“The beauty in utility”, “The beauty beyond human art”
He gave a new identity to Tanba ware from “Works created by human” to “Works created by nature” referring to the unknown in the firing process.

In my living room, I have an Ikea display case where I put some of my favorite pieces, as well as other artists’ work and some of the seashells and rocks I collected over the years. We had to childproof it recently. 🙂

France, Giroussens

01_P1070414About 42 km North-East of Toulouse, France is a little village called Giroussens. There, one can visit a lovely place entirely devoted to contemporary ceramics (with both a regional and international scope) through a boutique, exhibition spaces and workshops. This is a must-see attraction if you’re in the area.

02_P1070415I had the pleasure to visit it few years ago and discovered some great Italian and Spanish artists.

Here is the link to the site: http://www.centre-ceramique-giroussens.com (French only)

As an extra bonus, I have added some links to some of my favorite artists there:
