Last week-end, I went to what now feels like my personal pilgrimage, my annual rendezvous with local clay artists and friends: 260 Fingers (Glebe Community Centre, Ottawa). I usually peruse the aisles, mostly chatting with colleagues, longing for work by mentors and friends Leta and Don Cormier, checking out what other artists have been doing, discovering the year’s guests, wishing I was one of them some day, except that this year I came back with 2 pieces. Part of the reason I bought pieces this year is because I have been working as a Gallery Artist/Curator/Manager and I often hear people saying ”I’ll buy from you next time, next year…”, which always feels as a missed opportunity for both the artist and the potential collector. And I realized I had been doing the same for a few years, though to be fair I haven’t had any so-called “income” in a while being a full-time artist and mother to a toddler. This year though I allowed myself to indulge in buying art pieces I will treasure, while also choosing consciously to reinvest some of my earnings into the Arts Community.

I talked to Toronto artist Chiho Tokita, whose sculptures allude to functional work. I loved the fact that she works with coils and through addition and subtraction, constructs her pieces without the use of a mold. My favourite was the one that looked like a boat, of course…

This year, one of the guests’ work by Toronto artist Jeannie Pappas, reminded me of local artist Stefan Thompson, whose work I always found a little creepy but fascinating to look at. This is what I mean.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the direction artist Susie Osler is going. I knew of her colourful work but it never resonated with me as much as her series called “Objects for the hand and heart” does now. I can’t wait to see where it will lead her. The pieces are so tactile, soft like bones and antlers can be, “spirit-like” in their white porcelain body, cold to the touch, organic in their shape and “shamanic” in nature. Loved, loved, loved.

This year I tried to expand my presence on the market. I even spent a week in Montreal to talk to various Galleries. There are places of interest that I haven’t pursued further at the moment but it was a great adventure with positive feedback on my work as I brought some pieces along for the ride.

You can now find my work at the following locations:

  • The Hintonburg Pottery Shop / Earthen Vessels Clay Studio (Ottawa, ON)
  • The Ottawa School of Art Boutique (Ottawa, ON)
  • La Fab Boutique (Old Chelsea, QC)

I went this week-end to the best ceramics show in Ottawa. I go there every year, even worked there some of the previous years, have good ceramic artist friends there and still wish to be part of it some day. Enough about me, here are the pictures.

Today I went to see the Ottawa Guild of Potters Spring Sale. I am still a member of the Guild but am not currently exhibiting with them as it is mostly functional work people look for in these show. This is the 2nd time they use the former Horticulture Building at the Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. It was a hot and humid day both inside and out but the natural light was amazing.

After almost a year and a half I am back on the art scene and will be showing my work at the Ottawa Hungarian Community Centre (Ottawai Magyar Ház) on Sept 12-14, 2014. One may ask what is a French artist doing in a Hungarian art show? Well my husband is Hungarian and my son is half Hungarian as well and when I saw the call to artists I figured it would be a good opportunity to get back into business without too much pressure.

Last night I got this Best in Show Prize in the Ceramic/Sculpture category  for one of my “Bearing Witness” pieces at the Ottawa School of Art Fundraising Art Sale.
I was ecstatic. Here are some photos of the show.

Hier soir j’ai reçu le Prix de la meilleure céramique/sculpture pour une de mes pièces appelées “Bearing Witness” lors de la réception de la vente de bienfaisance de l’École d’art d’Ottawa. Je sautais de joie.

I’ve hopped on the Holiday wagon early on this year and produced some Christmas tree decorations. Here are 2 photos; the first shows the pieces bisqued (fired once) and painted with underglazes. The second the final result once glaze fired (cone 5-6). I chose not to put any clear glaze on top as it tarnishes the colors and darkens the clay even more.
Some are already for sale at the Boutique of the Ottawa School of Art.
