I had the pleasure to be invited to appear live on a local French TV show called ”Entre-nous” on Tuesday, January 27th. The TV Rogers hosts Barbara Laurenstin and Pierre-Antoine Rivard Paquet were very nice and we talked about my work and the reasons behind it. The interview felt too short and I wished I had been smarter in some of my answers but I believe we covered all the messages I wanted to convey (the Ottawa School of Art Alumni show running until February 8, the Exhibition at La Fab opening May 23, the fact that I am an artist in residence at the Ottawa School of Art and the link to my website so people can get all of the info they want). I don’t have a tape of the show yet but will post it as soon as I can get my hands onto it. In the meantime, here are some pictures taken on the set.

Every 2 years the Ottawa School of Art runs an Alumni show. It’s a great opportunity to see what fellow artists and friends have been working on and to catch up with them as well. Some don’t live in Ottawa.
It’s also a nice way to start the New Year as artist get paid CARFAC fees (for showing work in a professional Gallery).

Here are the 2 pieces that will go into the bell jars I previously mentioned.
They are based on the curio trade or a.k.a. the souvenir trade, which is one of the 4 main reasons why seahorses are an endangered species today.

In my living room, I have an Ikea display case where I put some of my favorite pieces, as well as other artists’ work and some of the seashells and rocks I collected over the years. We had to childproof it recently. 🙂

clocheI recently purchased 2 glass-bell jars similar to this one (minus the metallic end on the rope) at Michaels. I fell in love with them and thought they would be a great addition to my seahorse series. They have a marine/seaside quality to them and will be a metaphor for the curio trade. It refers to the many dried seahorses souvenir items tourists buy from in stores (key chains, cast in resin, etc.). It is one of the many reasons why seahorses are endangered.

Below is my latest seahorse sculpture. There is a support piece under its jaw for the bisque firing. This piece is supposed to fit under the bell but I might have made it too tall… We’ll see with the final firing. I intend to glaze it with my glue-glaze, which explains the absence of texture on his body.

Here are some pictures of last week-end’s show. I won the Public Choice Award. Yeah! I met some great artists and learned a lot from their experience. We also got interviewed, see below.

Paula Murray - © Louis BrunetWorking again in clay after giving birth to my baby boy in 2013 and with renowned artist Paula Murray, who would refuse such an offer? Not me. So, I will be part of an exciting project spanning from June 2014 to May 2015.
At the core of it, it is a collaboration between the Community-run Gallery called La Fab located at the Chelsea Art, Culture and Heritage Centre in Québec and the Ottawa School of Art.
La Fab14 artists will produce a collaborative work (7 emerging artists are paired with 7 established artists) and work throughout the year to prepare an exhibit in May 2015. Each pair is composed of a francophone and an anglophone artist. Finally, we all have different mediums so it promises to be an interesting take on the following theme: Lines in nature | La nature des choses.

One of the perks of being a member of the Ottawa Guild of Potters is that I have access to an extensive library of magazines and books on ceramics. In one of my favorite magazines, Ceramics Art and Perception (Issue #67, May 2007), I saw this beautiful work by Australian artist John Mawhinney.

The New South Wales artist uses a clay I would love to try my hands on: Southern Ice Porcelain. His sea-inspired pieces seek to illustrate that there are systems within systems in nature as well as chaos and order.
Although our approach to our work differ, I can’t help but thinking that there is great similarities in the esthetics between my most recent work and the pieces below.

Last October, I went to see a ceramics exhibition by a friend of mine, the up and coming talented artist Hilde Lambrecht. Titled ”Petrified Forest”, the work had a strong environmental impact statement and was shown at the Gallery of the Ottawa School of Art (inside the Shenkman Arts Centre).

The work spans over a year of her practice where one can see she has experimented with various techniques as well as mixed-media. I enjoy her play with scale which is something to consider when looking for a major visual impact. The bark-like pieces were some of my favorite pieces.
More information about Hilde’s work can be found on her website: www.h-art.ca
