I had the pleasure to be invited to appear live on a local French TV show called ”Entre-nous” on Tuesday, January 27th. The TV Rogers hosts Barbara Laurenstin and Pierre-Antoine Rivard Paquet were very nice and we talked about my work and the reasons behind it. The interview felt too short and I wished I had been smarter in some of my answers but I believe we covered all the messages I wanted to convey (the Ottawa School of Art Alumni show running until February 8, the Exhibition at La Fab opening May 23, the fact that I am an artist in residence at the Ottawa School of Art and the link to my website so people can get all of the info they want). I don’t have a tape of the show yet but will post it as soon as I can get my hands onto it. In the meantime, here are some pictures taken on the set.

Earlier this year I was approached by the Ottawa School of Art to be the Alumni Guest Speaker at the 2014 Graduation Ceremony. I was touched by this honour and promptly accepted. I also decided I would be talking about what the last 5 years taught me as a practicing artist.

Catching up with Marc (husband of my departed friend Paule Fournier).

It was a pleasure to meet the 11 promising artists and the Grad show called Meta is open to the public until July 26.
You’ll find the revised version of my presentation in .pdf format (notes were added to the slides).

Panel discussion with the presenters

Panel discussion with the presenters

Last October, I went to a conference for artists called ARTPRENEUR. I love to learn about the business of art as I know there is always room for improvement. With a theme like “Rebranding the artist”, they picked my curiosity. The program was announcing a whole day of networking, information/demo booths, 2 conferences out of 4 to choose from, breakfast and lunch included (nothing fancy of course). It sounded like a good deal.

WHAT I LEARNED

  • Inbound marketing is the key concept (use of Social Media to draw traffic, convert visitors to leads and leads to sales, then analyze results to improve upon);
  • Divide targeted audience into Buyer Persona (Name them, Describe them, Where are they online?, Keywords they search for?, How you solve their problems?, Content that serves them?);
  • Create Content for each Buyer Persona;
  • It’s all about getting people to care (about the product/brand). If they care they are more likely to purchase.
  • Be interesting, be consistent, be giving/sharing, be assertive and be analytical.

WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT IT

Suki Lee

Suki Lee

On the plus side, the Keynote address was outstanding. I could have left the conference after that speech because that person nailed it. Her name: Suki Lee, founder of the full-service marketing agency called Inbox Communications. She was smart, to the point and had a great on-stage presence. One thing for sure is that organizers should have kept her for the end of the day instead of having her opening the conference because it was mostly a letdown after that.

Sonny Juane

Sonny Juane

One of the presenters stood out as well for his sense of humour and a no-nonsense approach. Sonny Juane of Wolfgang Design Works.

On the downside, it was clear that some of the speakers were only there to pitch their business services. As well, public speaking is a skill and knowing about a subject is not enough to be able to address a crowd in an engaging manner. It often ends up being boring for the listener to just hear someone read out the slides on the screen…

Overall and with an early bird ticket which cost $35, I would say that it was worth it. I did learn a few things and enjoyed seeing friends and colleagues at the event. In a previous post I did mention books that help a great deal understand some of the concepts mentioned that day.

Favorite quote of the day by Carlo Lombard: “You network is your net worth”

Business of Art, Gestion de carrière artistique, Marketing

I found this website full of smart advices for artists. The booklet on ”Art Marketing” is a definite must-read. Portrait artist Gwenn Seemel explains the why and how of a sustainable art practice with easy to understand lingo that is down right to the point. It even has illustrations. Can’t ask for anything more.

This is exiting news for me as I have been wanting to make my own yearly Newsletter for a while now and finally found the energy to do so. I would have wanted for it to come out earlier but at least it’s done now. It can be seen on my website under the News section. It’s in PDF format.

I have been reading quite a few books on the Business of Art. Not all of them made an impression. Here is a list of my favourites:

  • I’d rather be in the Studio by Alyson B. Stanfield (if you had to have only one, this is the one; it is well written, has most of what one needs in their career)
  • Thinking outside the frame by Gayle Etcheverry (very easy read, lots of great tips and quotes, this book is about using the Internet and other ways to market your art and make a leaving)
  • The Creative Entrepreneur – A DIY Visual Guidebook for Making Business Ideas Real by Lisa Sonora Beam (the concept is to use visual journaling to integrate otherwise abstract business notions into your decision-making process)

Tous les livres présentés ci-dessus sont en anglais. Ils valent la peine de les lire.
